Welcome!

Salve! Welcome to K-2 Latin. My name is Meredith Bishop, and I am so happy to be joining the Archway Lincoln team this year. Just over a year ago I graduated from Gutenberg College, a classical, great-books school in Eugene, Oregon. Over the years I have studied Latin, Ancient Greek, and German. Language has always fascinated me, and I am thrilled to share my love of Latin with your children this year.
Over the course of the year, I will be teaching your children Latin vocabulary and basic grammar. By the end of the year they will be constructing simple Latin sentences using all the nouns, verbs, and adjectives they  have learned in a variety of tenses. I will be updating this blog monthly so that you can be up to date on the vocabulary and grammar your children are learning in class.
If you ever have questions or concerns you can contact me at mbishop@archwaylincoln.org. I will respond within one business day.

Quarter Three

Hello parents, We are well into the third quarter of the school year. In this quarter, we are delving in to spoken Latin.  We've spent the first half of the year laying the foundations and getting the students comfortable with using Latin in the classroom. Now, we are going to use those basics to grow our vocabulary and understanding of the Latin language. Each class, we will be spending 10-20 minutes using only Latin in a story or a vocabulary lesson. Our theme for the quarter is farm life. Your students will be learning Latin versions of songs like Old MacDonald, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Baa Baa Black Sheep. As far as vocabulary goes, we will be spending some time learning nouns that we find around the farm like animals, plants, etc. However, we are going to focus more on verbs that will allow us to tell stories about the animals on the farm. Below you will find the lyrics we have learned so far for Old MacDonald: Agricola habet fundum. E-I-E-I-O! Et in fundo habet

Quarter Two

Hello Parents, Welcome back! I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful break. This quarter, our theme is food. We will be learning a wide variety of nouns for fruits, vegetables, meats, desserts, drinks, etc. We will be expanding our vocabulary to include several adjectives to describe the flavors and qualities of food. In addition, we will practice many verbs to communicate the activities surrounding eating and cooking. All of our study will culminate in the reading of Eruca Famelicior (The Very Hungry Caterpillar). The kindergarteners will simply be working towards comprehension of the text. The first graders will work towards identifying the different types of words in the story. The second graders will also look at some of the grammatical structures in the book including the accusative case and the past tense. As always, the goal is primarily comprehension and communication, although we will explore some grammar concepts. Below, you can find a break down of the various vocabular

Quarter Four

Hello Parents, Here we are at the beginning of quarter four, and we find ourselves in all-new territory. As you know by now, we will be conducting our classes remotely for a while. Latin lessons will be included with your students' grade level packets. I want to make it clear that these lessons/worksheets should take no longer than 10 minutes each. Some of the activities will be creative, so if your student is engaged they may want to spend more time on the activity. However, they are not expected to spend more than 10-15 minutes on each lesson. I know we may all be going a bit stir crazy in our newfound situation. With that in mind, I have attached some links to free, online resources your students may be interested in. They do not all meet Great Hearts' pop-culture-free standards. However, as an extra-curricular resource they are informative, entertaining, and thematic with our quarter. Again, these resources are optional.  Crash Course Kids Astronomy (and Roman myths) T
